How to Find Psychiatric & Special Needs Residential Care in KwaZulu-Natal
A hospital admission is not a long-term home
State psychiatric hospitals do acute assessment and treatment and then discharge - they are not where someone lives long-term. Long-term residential care (group homes, halfway houses, supported living) is a separate and scarcer track. Knowing this early saves families months of confusion when a relative is stabilised and then discharged with nowhere settled to go.
Two different routes for two different situations
In an acute crisis where the person is a risk to themselves or others, the route is a clinic, GP or general-hospital casualty, and admission under the Mental Health Care Act, which a close relative applies for. For a stable adult who needs a place to live, the route is different: a community mental-health clinic, a hospital social worker, or a residential NGO contacted directly - not the hospital admission process.
Use the right referral front doors
For long-term residential referrals, phone SADAG (the national mental-health helpline, which keeps a referral database) or your provincial mental-health society affiliated to the SA Federation for Mental Health (the Cape Mental Health, Central Gauteng Mental Health, Durban and Coastal Mental Health type organisations). Ask the treating hospital or clinic's social worker for a referral once the person is medically stable.
Check licensing
A residential mental-health facility should be both a registered DSD NPO and licensed as a health establishment by the provincial Department of Health. Any home caring for five or more people with serious mental illness must be Health-licensed. Ask to see it. The Life Esidimeni tragedy, where discharged patients were placed with unlicensed NGOs, is exactly why this matters.
