What kinds of jobs are senior care facilities hiring for?

Senior care facilities are a surprisingly large employer in South Africa. A medium-sized old age home typically employs 20 to 40 people, and a full retirement village with a frail care wing can employ 100 or more. The most commonly advertised roles are:

• Caregiver / care worker - Helps residents with daily activities - washing, dressing, meals, mobility. Often the most common role. An Ancillary Health Care NQF 1 certificate or equivalent experience is usually expected.
• Frail care nurse - Registered with SANC. Provides 24-hour nursing care for residents who are bed-bound or have significant medical needs. Manages medication, wound care, and basic clinical procedures.
• Enrolled nurse / enrolled nursing auxiliary - Works under a registered nurse, assists with clinical care. SANC registration required.
• Kitchen and food service - Cooks, kitchen assistants. Most facilities provide three meals a day.
• Cleaner / housekeeping / laundry - Maintains the facility, residents' rooms, communal areas.
• Security - 24-hour security is standard at most facilities, especially retirement villages.
• Activities coordinator - Plans social programmes, exercise classes, outings. Less common but a great role if you enjoy working with seniors.

How the matching process works

We review applications regularly and, where we have a facility in your area that hires for your role and experience level, we pass your information on - usually via WhatsApp message or email to the facility manager. From there, the facility decides whether to contact you directly.

Tips for your application

• Use a phone number you check often - facilities usually contact applicants via WhatsApp.
• Be specific about your location. "Johannesburg" is broad; "Soweto, Diepkloof" or "Pretoria East, Faerie Glen" helps us match you to nearby facilities.
• List qualifications in plain words: SANC registration number if you have one, NQF level, any first aid or dementia care training.
• If you have no formal qualifications but have experience caring for an elderly relative, say so. Many facilities value this.
• Mention languages you speak. Multilingual carers are in demand, especially Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho, and Xhosa speakers.
