The Camphors Care Centre
30 Blessing Ninela Road, Hillcrest, Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal
The Camphors Care Centre is a family-run care centre on 10 acres of indigenous gardens in Hillcrest, in Durban's Upper Highway area. It has four sections: The Studio's, 10 bachelor-type assisted-living flats; The Annex, 10 en-suite semi-frail care rooms; the frail care section, for a maximum of 20 residents in two-bed en-suite rooms; and The Lodge, a specialised Alzheimer's and dementia centre opened in 2011. Residents can move from assisted living to semi-frail care and then to The Lodge or frail care as their needs change. It also offers respite care, rehabilitation after a hospital discharge and palliative care. The owners, Jack and Mariann Lang, built The Camphors as a family home in 1992 and took in their first two patients in December 1996. Families can visit at any time, with a rest period recommended from 12:30 to 14:00 and evening visits kept to a minimum, and visiting pets are welcome.
Typical costs for frail care facilities in South Africa
We do not have The Camphors Care Centre’s own fees. As a general guide:
Frail care splits into two markets. Private care centres that publish tariffs start around R27,000/month and run past R40,000; non-profit, church-run and smaller independent homes run roughly R9,000–R23,000/month. SASSA pensioners may access subsidised frail care through NGO-run facilities, where the resident pays over their pension. Some medical aids cover frail care partially, usually for a limited number of days.
These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
