Plumstead Rusoord

1 Birmingham Way, Plumstead, 7800, Plumstead, Western Cape

Old Age Homeafrikaans community

PlumRus, formerly Plumstead Rusoord, is a faith-based retirement community guided by Christian values in Plumstead, Cape Town; it describes its setting as the Constantia Valley. It was founded through the Plumstead Dutch Reformed Church, and its first residents moved in in October 1987. It is home to 220 residents across three options: independent living in one-, two- and three-bedroom flats held under a life-right loan agreement, where a reduced monthly levy applies and the full loan is refunded to the resident's estate or nominated account if they pass away or move out; assisted living in rented bachelor and one-bedroom flats with a bathroom and kitchenette; and 24-hour frail care in shared, single, spacious single and 'penthouse' rooms with built-in cupboards and a hand basin, where the brochure says bathrooms are shared. Frail care has a sister in charge on every shift and one carer to six residents by day and one to thirteen at night, with medication and nappy administration included. PlumRus also runs day care (06:30 to 18:30, seven days a week), respite stays and home-based care, and says plainly that it is not a hospital. It operates a waiting list.
