Oudtshoorn Rotary Retirement Village

Oudtshoorn Rotary Retirement Village is a life-right village for people aged 55 and older on the bank of the Grobbelaars River in Oudtshoorn, within walking distance of the business centre. It was founded as a project of the Rotary Club of Oudtshoorn in 1993, and the club is still involved in running it: the village is governed by a management board of five Rotarians and four members. There are 120 units, from single units of about 28m² to three-bedroom houses of up to 160m², all on ground level with a north-facing stoep. The main building holds a dining hall, a multipurpose lounge and lecture room, a hairdressing salon, a library and the care unit, which has 11 single and 15 double rooms with care 24 hours a day, a separate division of 6 single rooms for people living with dementia, and temporary accommodation and care for people from outside the village. Residents who hold a life right and pay the set membership fee and care unit levy qualify for admission to the care unit when they need it. No agent commission, transfer costs or attorney's fees are payable, and when membership ends 80% of the reselling price is paid back to the resident or their estate; the village sets unit prices and final reselling prices once a year. On top of the purchase price there is a monthly levy, calculated from a basic levy per square metre, a care unit levy, electricity and water consumption, and lunches. The levy covers 24-hour security, municipal taxes, two hours of cleaning a week, building insurance, exterior maintenance, lawn mowing and refuse removal; residents insure their own household contents. The village does not publish unit prices on its website.
