Murambi House Nursing Home

Murambi House has cared for older people in Wynberg since 1966 and describes itself as one of the longest-established geriatric homes in the Western Cape. It takes both permanent and short-term residents, roughly 110 to 115 at a time, and says it aims to give each person individual and personal attention. Accommodation runs from private single rooms, most with en-suite bathrooms, through semi-private doubles and flats to small wards, with a separate 16-bed dementia and Alzheimer's unit and further dementia residents accommodated in private rooms. A clinic on site cares for bedridden and terminally ill residents, and the home offers post-operative and palliative care. Residents keep their own doctors and the nursing staff liaise with them regularly. Qualified nursing staff are on the premises around the clock. Beyond nursing, the home runs its own kitchen preparing three home-cooked meals a day on a four-weekly winter and summer menu cycle, a fully staffed laundry, and a day-care service for families who need a relative looked after during working hours. Life in the home includes group physiotherapy twice a week, outings, games mornings, a library, a weekly hairdresser and a tuck shop. Fees are a monthly rental and vary with the type of accommodation.
