Little Eden Society is a non-profit organisation that provides lifelong residential care for children, adults and seniors with profound intellectual disabilities. It was founded in 1967 and runs two homes: the Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenglen, Edenvale, and Elvira Rota Village in Bapsfontein. According to the society's website, about 300 residents live in the two homes and a professional nurse is on duty 24 hours a day. Smaller children and those needing intensive medical care generally live at the Edenvale home, and older, more mobile residents live at Elvira Rota Village. Care includes medical care, personal care with three meals and two tea times a day, and therapies such as occupational, water, music, pet, horse and physiotherapy. Little Eden is a registered care facility under the Gauteng Department of Health. The website states that applicants must have an assessment stating severe or profound mental disability, be South African citizens and have lived in Gauteng for at least two years. Those who meet the criteria are placed on a waiting list until a placement is available.
