Old Age Home100 beds

Kensington Home for the Aged is a non-profit, community-based home in Kensington, Cape Town, providing residential care for frail older people. It is subsidised by the Department of Social Development and is registered as an NPO (reg. 026-367). The home has capacity for 100 frail aged residents, and the majority of the people it cares for are living with dementia. In March 2023 it opened a dedicated dementia unit, built with donor support: the unit has around 20 rooms, each able to accommodate two residents, plus a sunroom where activities happen and meals are served, and it is staffed by carers who completed a dementia course. A donor-sponsored minibus fitted with a wheelchair lift is used to take residents to hospital appointments and on outings. The home has run an arts-and-crafts and games programme, reported to include dominoes, cards, Rummikub, Uno, ball games, swing ball for hand-eye co-ordination, and memory games for residents with dementia. The home has been providing residential care to its community since the 1970s and relies on donations alongside its DSD subsidy.

Typical costs for old age homes in South Africa

We do not have Kensington Home For Aged’s own fees. As a general guide:

Private old age homes charge R6,000–R20,000/month. NGO and church-run homes are often subsidised and accept SASSA pension (currently R2,400/month). Government-subsidised beds are limited and often have waiting lists.

These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
