Huis Herfsblaar is a retirement home for older people in Queenswood, Pretoria, under the guardianship of the NG Gemeente Queenswood (a Dutch Reformed congregation), founded in 1983. It has 174 single and double self-care flats in four blocks with lifts; 69 luxury-finished one-, two- and three-bedroom townhouses, each with a private garden and garage; and a 175-bed care unit for frail residents, with single and double rooms sharing bathrooms as well as luxury units with private bathrooms. Its care includes an Alzheimer's section. Nursing staff work with doctors, physiotherapists, social workers, ministers and pastoral workers. The on-site Herfsmed Clinic is registered with the Department of Health and contracted with several medical aids; it provides 24-hour nursing, post-operative wound care, pain management, acute rehabilitation (after amputation, stroke, brain injury or orthopaedic surgery) and terminal care, and has an emergency room, ECG machine and defibrillator. There is a Van Heerden pharmacy on the premises. Homes are taken up with an occupation right, of which 16% is a once-off non-refundable entry fee and 84% is held as a debenture in the resident's favour, plus a monthly levy; placement is subject to evaluation. The office is open 07:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday.
