Holy Cross Home in Suiderberg, Pretoria, is a 24-hour frail care centre for 84 frail and extremely frail people, run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross with their co-workers and registered as a non-profit organisation (001-76NPO). It grew out of a health care centre established in 1932, which became the Holy Cross Nursing Home maternity hospital. The home itself opened in 1984 and became a frail care centre in 1994, when it opened its doors to everyone in need regardless of colour, culture or religion. Residents are cared for by qualified health and palliative care staff, a social worker and auxiliary staff. The home provides basic and specialised nursing care, and its daily routine includes help with personal hygiene (up to full care), three meals and teas a day (most residents need help with eating), medical and nursing care, physical exercise, spiritual accompaniment, reflexology and pedicures, and occupational therapy. Residents live in single or shared rooms, and the home has a dining room, recreation rooms, treatment rooms, a garden and a chapel. The home says a Social Development grant funds about 25% of the frail care centre, and the monthly shortfall comes from residents' families, fundraising and donations.
