Old Age Home

Glevera Haven is a sectional-title complex in Rietvalleirand, Pretoria, for people over 50, close to shops, hospitals and services and easily reached from the N1. It has 69 bachelor, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, each with a kitchenette and bathroom. Its stated concept is that care comes to the resident: in its own words, all nursing services and care are home based and happen in the comfort of the unit, from basic care through to frail care. The owner of each unit pays a monthly levy relative to the unit, plus a service levy. The site describes basic nursing care, cleaning, laundry, 24-hour security and 15 lunches a month per resident as covered, but it uses 'service levy' in one place and 'monthly levy' in another for the same items, so which of the two carries them is worth confirming with the home. Basic care is described as blood-pressure measurement, medication control, basic wound care, bed-making, showering and help with basic needs, delivered from a 24/7 nursing station with a nurse call system; a registered sister is on site on weekdays and on call around the clock, and a doctor consults residents in their units every Wednesday. Care beyond that, up to sleep-in nursing, is charged per hour per day on a fixed extra nursing care levy, and the Nursing Service Manager assesses each resident on admission and regularly afterwards. The kitchen is open every day of the year and supplies three meals a day, but only 15 lunches a month are stated as included; breakfast, supper, extra lunches and Sunday lunches are ordered on a weekly basis. Breakfast and supper are delivered to the units and lunch is taken either in the dining hall or in the unit; special diets including diabetic, gluten free, soft food and allergy diets are catered for. Cleaners are on duty Monday to Friday to clean public areas and units, with a deep clean of every unit once a week, and the laundry allows 5 kg per resident per week within the levy. The building is designed for reduced mobility, with wide hallways, slopes and tiles that are wheelchair friendly, and wheelchair-friendly light switches in the units, and there is a generator for power outages.

Typical costs for old age homes in South Africa

We do not have Glevera Haven’s own fees. As a general guide:

Private old age homes charge R6,000–R20,000/month. NGO and church-run homes are often subsidised and accept SASSA pension (currently R2,400/month). Government-subsidised beds are limited and often have waiting lists.

These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
