Douglas Murray Home for the Aged is a non-profit frail care home in Retreat, Cape Town, registered as the Wynberg Society for the Aged (NPO 003/170). It opened on 30 August 1969, and at any given time it cares for between 70 and 80 residents who need frail care, from the Retreat community and wider Cape Town and from families with limited resources. Care is provided 24 hours a day and includes medication management under the medical officer's protocols, on-site medical and clinical care with referrals to primary, regional and tertiary health care, physiotherapy in partnership with UCT and UWC, and a healthy diet. Its application form lists the admission criteria as needing 24-hour nursing or supervision, receiving a monthly pension, having funeral insurance and having a family member or guardian able to pay a monthly family contribution, with a non-refundable advance for board and lodging paid on admission; applicants who do not meet a criterion are asked to get in touch.
